The Godfather

Dick Smith, known as the godfather of make-up, created the make-up for the character of Don Corleone; played by Marlon Brando in the godfather. It was said that Brando didn’t want any prosthetic appliances stuck to his face so Smith used the same concept that Jack Pierce used to create many of his characters, building the appliances on the actors face. It was said that Brando didnt want big prosthetic pieces on his face due to time considerations. (H. Lebo, p85)

Smith used liquid latex, applied all over Brando’s skin, in a stippling method, with a sponge. The skin would then be stretched and the latex would then be dried with a hair dryer. To create the famous jowls Don Corleone had in the film, Smith created a denture called a plumper, which padded his jowls. (A.McKenzie, D. Ware p.119)

Althought Smith had not used any prosthetic on Brando, i thought this was a interesting aspect of make up within the American film industry to explore, i did this because in an age of new materials to use, Brando refused meaning Smith had to look to different techniques and materials.
